Boas, Franz


Franz Boas (1858-1942) was the single most influential anthropologist in North America in the twentieth century. Boas is noted for challenging the ideas of cultural evolutionists who believed that the pattern ofhistory is one of progress, whereby societies develop through stages of savagery, barbarism, and eventuallycivilization.
