Famed for its cheese, beer, and butter, the Badger State is also a center for industrial manufacturing and forestry. Its capital is Madison. Wisconsin was admitted as the 30th state in 1848, having been carved out of the Northwest Territory. It was originally inhabited by the Ottawa and Huron peoples, who in turn had displaced the native Winnebago, Kickapoo, and other tribes.
