The Colony of New York became a state on 20 April 1777 with the adoption of its first constitution.New York State is surrounded on the north by the Province of Quebec, Canada, on the east by the State of Vermont, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the States of Connecticut and Rhode Island, on the south by the State of New Jersey, on the southwest by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and on the northwest by the Province of Ontario, Canada.
