Essex derives from 'East Seaxe' so, land of the East Saxons. The County of Essex - one of the 'Home Counties' - falls in the East Anglian region of England. It has an extensive coastline with the usual maritime features, and ranges from traditional small villages in the north to London suburbs in the south. Note from the Essex editors: there are many towns and villages listed here without their own editor. Why not volunteer? Contact any of the editors at the foot of the Essex page if you want advice before making an application.
