Marine mammals should not be listed in the Marine Life category. There are a total of 4,060 mammals all together, living species. There are some defining characteristics that make a mammal a mammal. 1) Mammary glands are what makes a mammal a mammal. It is responsible for the process of lactation, or the production of milk. This helps mothers feed their young. 2) The presence of hair or fur for the purpose of insulation is also a defining characteristic. It helps maintain temperature. Breaking away: The test projects are finished and we have moved over 100 sites over from test into the mammals category. We hope you appreciate the effort, and we hope to continue to recognize and act on you, kids and teens, and your needs. We would like to give credit, where it is due, to information located on the site http://www.csupomona.edu/~dfhoyt/classes/zoo138/CHAR_MAM.HTML . This site has allowed us to determine what animals belong in mammals, and what do not. Thank you very much to the webmaster(s) of the site.
